mydlight STORY
Time and again, Harry Schumacher brought these candles back with him from his numerous trips to Rome. Even though he’s not really a candle type of guy. These were always huge candles adorned with images of Pope John XXIII, Padre Pio and other eminent figures of the Roman Catholic Church. Even though he’s not even Catholic. So why these candles? On the one hand, because there’s nothing more Italian and, on the other hand, because these candles turned into amazing objects as soon as they became part of his living space. The room changed them. And as his collection grew and grew, he asked himself why these candles should only be reserved for the Vatican. So many other themes were conceivable. And, at the very least, to restore what is inherent to a candle: Lifestyle and class – and a place in every home.
mydlight CONCEPT
Classic home accessories, newly interpreted – that’s what it’s all about for the designers at mydlight. The company, located in Augsburg in Southern Germany, was founded by Harry Schumacher and Stephan Krause in 2008. Their first project is devoted to the candle. A basic object that stands for several fundamental things, like light and warmth, but which, at the same time, is in danger of disappearing behind a heavy veil of customs and symbolism. Rescuing the candle from this niche is exactly what Schumacher and Krause intend to do.
For their project, Schumacher and Krause have successfully enlisted renowned artists and designers. Context shifts, realized via photos, illustrations, images, graphic elements, comics and colours, transform the candle into a subtly playful home accessory that has little to do with baroque cosiness: always highly aesthetic and original, sometimes a bit ironic, often completely surprising. Candles that are also for those who normally don’t buy candles.
Candles from mydlight are available in select specialty furniture and design shops. mydlight also offers business customers an individual range that is personalisable.
